100. In earlier days few people readWhitman's poems. One person who did read them was Abraham Lincoln who was thena country lawyer. He liked the strength and honesty of Whitman's words. He and Whitman often nodded to each other.

Early in April the civil war ended. But onApril 13 someone shot President Lincoln, and on 14 Lincoln died. To Whitman itwas like the death of a friend. He loved Lincoln so much. He wrote a poem toexpress his feelings about the death of the president. It was one of hissaddest and most beautiful poems.

101. Down the entrance hall of the schoolwalk four eighth-grade students. Each one is carrying a small basket with asingle egg inside. Soon more students join them-each one of them is alsocarrying a basket with an egg. The eggs in a basket are part of a new schoolprogram that helps young people understand that having a baby is a great duty.

At the beginning of the program, the teacherputs the students in pairs-one girl and one boy. Each pair gets an egg, whichthey must take care of for two weeks. But it's also somethingthat parents spend a lot of time doing.

Children say that the program has helped themunderstand the duties involved in having a child. "It was reallyhard," said one student, "You had to think all the time about theegg."

103. To use it seems so natural to put up anumbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was notinvented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against thesun!

Nobody knows who first invented it, but theumbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were theChinese, way back in the eleventh century B. C..

We know that the umbrella was used in ancientEgypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected withits use: it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancienttimes the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in highoffice.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to usethe umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancientGreece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrellaas protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the use of theumbrellas practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the latesixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority.By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.

By the eighteenth century, the umbrella wasused against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much instyle during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. Itwasn't until the twentieth century that women's umbrellas began to be made, ina whole variety of colors.
